Why is Vancouver Best?
Vancouver is often compared with: - Toronto and Montreal - the other two large Canadian cities
- San Franscisco and Los Angeles - other west coast destination cities - they are American
- Victoria - British Columbia's capital and rival on the Island
- Seattle - an American city across the border with a similar climate
- Portland - another American city nearby with a similar casual, eco-conscious lifestyle
- Whistler - the resort town renowned for world-class skiing – this one is less “compare” and more “and” - there's no reason to do just Whistler – do both!
In my humble opinion, Vancouver is the best! To be serious though, this city is great, and it all depends on what you're looking for.
Why you should come to Vancouver:Beautiful scenery... ocean, mountains, trees, rivers – all right here. Ocean-front... the Pacific Ocean is right next door... step, step, splash!Mountains... the only ones that are as majestic as the mountains in British Columbia are the Alps around Switzerland!Outdoor recreation... if you like getting outside and doing things, this is the place for you. We just had the Winter Olympics at Whistler, so there's world-class skiing and snowboarding on the mountains. There's spectacular hiking and mountain biking trails in summer. Great surfing, kayaking, sailing, or any kind of boating all year round. Mild winters... the only city in Canada where the average winter temperature is above freezing. We don't get very much snow... but we do get some rain. West Coast lifestyle... laid-back, casual, eco-conscious. Quality of life is very important.Accepting environment... our population is ethnically diverse and there's lots of folks making individual choices. Not a problem here.Superb ethnic restaurants... from everywhere in the world: Japanese, Italian, Greek, Ethiopian, Chinese, Jamaican, Korean, Mongolian, Serbian, Mexican... and the list goes on. Good value for money as well (or so my better-traveled friends tell me).Nightlife... is good but if you're really into partying, you may prefer a larger city. Everyone is tired after a long day of playing outside to go out at night!Very little pollution... for the size of the city (especially if you compare with the air quality of Los Angeles or Toronto).
Maybe You Might Not Like... And if I have to admit to something that you might not like here: Damp Winters... some say we have two seasons: summer and rain. I personally prefer rain to snow, but others do complain. Even when it's not raining, it will often be cloudy and grey.Vancouver rain is so renowned, you can even buy a souvenir bottle! Cost of Living... if you plan on moving here, cost of living is expensive, but if you're just visiting, costs are about average for a big city.
But You Can't Beat...Vancouver for scenery, outdoor year-round recreation, awesome food or that relaxed West Coast attitude!
